What's it cost to do my quilt?

I try to make my rates as easy to compute as possible. Easy for me, easy for you.

Length + Width divide by 2

Getting ready to quilt
Ready to start quilting
My business card says length + width and divide by 2. That's an estimate in dollars. So, if you bring me a top that's 68" wide and 80" long, that's a total of 148" which is divided by 2 and equals $74. That's a 'ball park' figure so you have an idea of what you're looking at for quilting cost.

Simple–Bit less—More–Bit more

I work on this quilt mostly at night with overhead lights off and a black light in the machne. The pattern was put onto the quilt with florescent chalk.
If you choose a simple pattern from edge to edge, it will be less than $74. If your choice is more design elements in the borders and sashing, then it will be a little more.

Custom—Even more

Should your choice be custom quilting in all blocks, sashing and borders,

the cost will be even more.

How much more depends on so many things, not limited to but including, number of blocks, stitch in the ditch, construction of the top and how fast the top needs to be finished.

My best advice to you

I saw a sign in an auto repair shop that read... Cheap! Fast! Good! Take your pick of two but you can't have all three. I liked that.

What patterns should I use?

Most quilters tell me, "Just do what you think will look best". So if that's your request, since we've already established what you expect to pay, I'll take it from there.

What techniques do you offer?

You can choose many quilting methods.  Edge-2-Edgepantographs, advancing the fabric, cross hatch quilting, and vintage cross-hatch quilting. I do all of them.

I can do meander of all sizes and types, feathers, circles, cross-hatching, traupanto (both real and faux), McTavishing and just plain old fashioned quilting.

I find that some tops call for combinations of known and just invented designs that just sort of happen as I work.Occasionally, I will design my own or use a purchased pattern.

Do I bring backing & binding?

Yes bring your backing unless you want to buy some from me. I do binding for an extra charge.

Do you do binding?

I can sew binding to the top while quilting it ($12). You will need to sew it by hand to the backing. If I do the complete binding job it will be sewn by machine to the front ($24)

Do you sell batting?

It takes lots of batting to finish all your quilts
I have Hobbs 80-20 108" wide batting. This is my work horse and I consistently get great results and have fewer problems with this batting than any other cotton blend that I have used. I charge $4.50 per yard.

I also carry Hobbs low loft poly 98" wide. Again, this is my favorite for the same reasons as above. Charge is $4.20 per yard.

I will also use almost any batting that the quilter provides. I do ask that you not bring me Mountain Mist, as it is just too fragile for longarm quilting.

Another area of the community service quil that I made for our Santiam Scrappers Quilt Guild. We donates these quilts to ABC House in Albany, FISH in Lebanon and similar groups.

Can I get help on quilt making?

When I get a top that has some difficulties, I'll do a one-on-one tutorial with the quilter. If (and this is a big if) I feel that she will be responsive to some constructive education.

Tips on backing and batting

Starting with our guild newsletter, Scrappers Snippets, I'm putting in articles related to getting quilt tops, backing and batting ready to finish.

These tips are for the quilter who will either be taking their tops to someone else to finish or working at home on their own machines.

(Sue is a member of Linn County's quilting guild, the Santiam Scrappers Quilt Guild. Here is a link to Scrappers Snippets.)

Do you offer special services?

My answer is, "I try to never say never—You just have to ask."
